The Ewing Memorial Library, in coordination with Class Teacher Ms. Sobia Karan, organized a comprehensive training for 25 students of ENG 331: Research Methods for English Literature and Language Course, on “How to use the Ewing Memorial Library Information Resources for a better quality academic Research.
The two-day training program included an elaborate guided tour and demonstration of Library resources which are useful at each step of the research process from the theme to the thesis.
Starting from the importance and use of general as well as subject-specific encyclopedia, handbooks and other reference books available in the Library, the Library staff demonstrated how these reference books can be used to understand and refine the topic of the research and to adjust the scope of their study well in time.
After that the students were introduced to FOPAC, the Forman Online Public Access Catalog and how the searches could be made to find relevant books available in the Library collection. Students were asked to note down the Call Numbers and the Library staff escorted the students to the relevant shelves to teach them how the books are arranged and how they can locate the book they are looking for.
Students were also informed about how to evaluate the quality of the retrieved information before using them for their research. Brief introduction of HEC Digital Library Resources was also part of this session.
The students as well the teacher found these sessions very useful and informative.
Farina Khizer, one of the participating students said,” I think our two sessions in the Library will be very beneficial for me, not only for the research but also in my further studies. I came to know how with the many information resources, I can get comprehensive information about my Research Topic.”
Areej Farooq, another student observed that “We became familiar with all section of the library. Introduction about using the Encyclopedia would be helpful in our further studies and research”.
